THE FIRE IN MY LINEAGE: FROM SURVIVAL TO SUCCESS
I come from a long line of resilient Black pioneers who survived slavery, racial violence, Jim Crow laws, segregation, and economic systems explicitly designed to deny us wealth. In the early 1900s, my family was among 100 Black families who fled American terror to settle in Alberta, Canada. It was not free from racism, but they built anyway. They chose freedom, land ownership, and opportunity.
That fire was passed down through generations:
- My Grandmother, Velma Carter: A multi-business entrepreneur, historian, author, and one of the first Black women vice principals in Berkeley, California, she dedicated her life to preserving Black Canadian history and legacy.
- My Father: A former member of the Black Panther Party who stood fiercely for justice and self-determination. When safety concerns forced him to flee the United States, he arrived in Canada with nothing. He rebuilt his life from scratch, eventually becoming one of Alberta’s very first Black millionaires through real estate investing.
Growing up, I was surrounded by this beautiful legacy of Black excellence.
Yet, like so many women, I still spent years underestimating my own value. I poured my energy into building everyone else’s dreams while leaving my own on the sidelines, struggling with deep self-doubt and constantly questioning my own worth.
